Gem Legacy Adventures is dedicated to bringing curious world travelers and gem lovers to visit the artisanal gem mining communities of East Africa. Our Adventures are centered on the initiatives of Gem Legacy in Tanzania and Kenya and exploring the surrounding culture and national parks. Our hope is for you to leave with an appreciation of the unique and vibrant culture of East Africa and the hard work of artisanal gemstone miners.
Wildlife safaris in Tanzania's famous national parks
The wild, untamed beauty of Tanzania and Kenya's varied ecosystems
Efforts to support artisanal gem miners and their communities
Anyone! You do not need to be a member of the jewelry industry.
Our adventures are very friendly to all fitness levels! The only physically strenuous activity is visiting artisanal gem mines and it is up to you if or how far you would like to venture! When visiting mines bathrooms will not be available during the day and curated bathrooms stops in nature will be provided.
All hotels will offer wifi and hot water.
Travelers should expect to go to the bathroom outdoors among bushes while on long drives in rural areas to visit initiatives or gem mines. “Curated” outdoor bathroom locations will be planned for privacy and comfort.
The hardness level will vary, but a range of hardness levels will be offered (tunnel, open pit, etc.) so that every traveler will feel included. Even without traveling inside a mine, there is much to be seen and learned from the outside of a mine or taking just a few steps inside.
You’ll have firsthand, authoritative experience at the source of how gem mining takes place in East Africa, a gem-rich region. As well, when a consumer asks if gems harm those who mine them, you’ll be able to show them that, when performed responsibly, artisanal and small-scale gem mining is legitimate work, and sometimes the only way people can earn a living in certain regions.
You are responsible for your own flights to NBO and from JRO. You can fly on any airline on your own schedule but you must arrive by and not leave before the dates and times outlined in the group itinerary. There may be extra costs for transportation to the city/hotel and the guide may not be available to meet you at the airport.
Gem Legacy Adventures is a partner company to Gem Legacy, the 501(c)3 nonprofit charity. 100% of the profit from the Adventures support the administrative costs of Gem Legacy so that as much as possible of every donation goes directly to the initiatives.
Both Tanzania and Kenya have been extremely peaceful since their independence in the 1960s. We will be traveling with vetted local guides to predetermined locations. In addition, the trip will not include excursions downtown in any major cities.
We are a partner company of Gem Legacy, a 501c3 nonprofit supporting vocational training, entrepreneurship, and community development in East African artisanal gem mining communities. Our Adventures are focused on sharing the charity’s work and initiatives with our travelers. 100% of the profits of Gem Legacy Adventures support the administrative costs of the charity.
